Was born 17th October 1957. He began training in Martial arts at the age of 12 with Mr Sudu. After trying several arts including Wushu Kung fu with Sifu Slade, Robin Reid “retired” in order to concentrate on his football skills.
A number of years later whilst an apprentice engineer, he was persuaded by a colleague to attend a Shotokan Karate club run by Sensei Charlie Potter.
Sensei Potter was not initially impressed with the young Mr Reid and after each of his first three lessons told him that he should not return, however this only provided inspiration to try harder. His first grading was for yellow belt by Kancho Kanazawa in 1978.
Robin Reid attained his Shodan (1st Dan Black Belt) in 1984. It was at this time that he fulfilled his ambition to train at the Yotsuya Shotokan Karate International Headquarters (SKI Honbu) in Tokyo under the instruction of Kancho Hirokazu Kanazawa (now 10th Dan Supreme Instructor and President of Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation).
Upon his return to the United Kingdom, he took up his first Karate Instructor post in Leighton Buzzard under the instruction of Sensei John Cowes (TASK). Sensei Reid was also a member of the formidable TASK Kumite team.
In 1990 Sensei Reid resigned from TASK and founded the Katsu Academy of Shotokan Karate. He then continued his own personal Karate-Do training under Sensei Harvey Barker and later Hanshi Shiro Asano (9th Dan European Chief Instructor of the Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation) with whom he still trains regularly.
Now the rank of 5th Dan and Chief Instructor and examiner of the Katsu Academy of Shotokan Karate Association International, Sensei Reid employs a simple philosophy to his training and to that of his students. “Give your training everything you've got and then train harder.”
