About us
.
Katsu Academy of Shotokan Karate Association International was founded in 1990 by Sensei Robin Reid (5th Dan)
At KASKAI all our classes teach traditional Shotokan Karate, with an emphasis on Strong Spirit and Perfection of Technique.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT:
Whether you are looking to increase your confidence, improve your fitness, flexibility and strength or just wish to learn to defend yourself, KASKAI’s friendly environment and comprehensive syllabus provides high levels of technical ability and self discipline.
Through regular training sessions students will find physical improvements and, as the future of our Martial Art, you will be treated with respect and encouraged within your limits. This ensures all students have the opportunity to fully develop themselves, and continually improve as they journey along the “way”
Sensei Reid teaches personally at dojos (hall or training place) from Spalding to Hemel Hempstead and instructs students of all ages and abilities from 6 into their 60’s. In addition to Sensei's instruction, at KASKAI students can expect to be taught by both male and female instructors from Shodan (first Black Belt) upwards.

BEGINNERS COURSES:
Every student of Karate or any other Martial Art throughout the world once was a beginner.
Everyone has to start somewhere; the Katsu Academy runs regular beginners courses for all ages and skill levels.
Shotokan Karate is beneficial for children; however we also have an increasing number of adult beginners, who find Karate benefits them both physically and mentally.
Our beginners courses are run on a regular basis. At the end of this period you may attempt your first grading to 10th Kyu.

TRAINING:
Regular structured training sessions:
Karate classes teach one or a combination of the following:
Kihon (Basic Karate Techniques) - Blocks, Punches, Strikes and Kicks
Kata (Prearranged patterns of Basic Techniques) - Standard Shotokan Kata
Kumite (Fighting) - Basic prearranged one-step sparring to free fighting
Regular Gradings:
Regular Gradings ensure that students improvements are tested, and they are encouraged to always move to the next level.
At each successful grading students are awarded a certificate showing the grade they are worthy of and they can wear the next belt. Their Karate License will be updated to show the improvement made.
There are 10 Kyu grades 10th to 1st that have to be achieved before attempting Shodan 1st Level Black Belt (there are also intermediate Kyu grades for younger children)
Black Belts continue to be graded through Dan grades from 1st to 10th
Regular Training Courses:
In addition to regular classes at KASKAI, there are regular opportunities to attend courses with visiting instructors the calibre of Sensei Paul Mead (6th Dan) and Hanchi Shiro Asano (9th Dan European Chief Instructor of the Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation).
Courses are sometimes not directly Shotokan Karate and have included Ti-Chi, Yoga and basic weapons courses (Bo Long Staff). These all augment a students understanding of Karate and the techniques employed.
See Diary for details of upcoming courses.
